Following up on a recent post where we chatted about how to make summer outfits feel a little more styled, I thought I’d show some real examples, this time with a focus on sandals. They’re the perfect way to lean into that high-low energy. They instantly relax an outfit, making it feel more effortless. I truly think this is why the Olsens are so often spotted in flip-flops, it’s that quiet kind of “I just threw this on” cool that’s hard to replicate.
So, in this edition, we’re diving into sandals: how we’re styling them and which pairs are worth the investment.
01
A breezy slip dress is pretty much non-negotiable this time of year. It’s easy to throw on and yet always feels put-together, which is exactly what we need when it’s way too hot. I like finding small ways to change it up by layering it over a thin tee or throwing on a soft shawl. But honestly, the thing that keeps it from feeling too dressed up is the sandals. A simple leather slide shifts the mood and makes the overall look feel a little more relaxed. Aeyde makes some of my favourite styles, like these leather slides. They’re minimal and go with absolutely everything. It’s the kind of shoe you don’t really think about, but always end up wearing.
02
Pale blue and black is one of those classic colour combinations that always feels elevated without trying too hard. I’m especially into these Manolo Blahnik sandals (right at the top of my wishlist!). There’s something sculptural about them which feels unique yet wearable. As for the shirt, I think it looks best untucked with a few buttons undone here and there with the sleeves rolled up. Although both pieces are relaxed in their silhouette, the pleats and contrast trim feel feminine and smart. Silver goes great with this colour palette, so finish the look with a silver watch and hoops.
03

A tank top and trousers is a classic summer uniform. It’s the kind of combo that always works, but still leaves room to play. I’m especially into this top because it’s made from silk-twill, not shiny silk, so it has that slightly matte finish. Still soft and drapey, but with a bit more polish. As for the sandals, I was on the hunt for the perfect strappy sandal and came across these. We all need a strappy sandal that still feels sturdy and walkable, could this be the one?

Sleeveless blazers are a game-changer during summer. Waistcoats are chic too, but this just feels a little more elevated. Plus, I’m always looking for ways to look chic without sleeves during summer! With floaty trousers like these, I’d avoid anything too soft or billowy up top as it can start to lean into pyjama territory. In the city, especially, these kinds of trousers need something structured to balance them out. The same goes for the shoes. A bit of hardware, like a chunky buckle, helps anchor the look. Even just a crisp cotton tee with a bold necklace would do the trick.
05
A.Emery is the place to go for minimalist, sculptural sandals; their designs just have that perfect balance. The Jalen style is chunky and grounded but still pairs beautifully with more elegant pieces. I love how the shorter trouser hem lets the sandals take centre stage. The tan tote brings a bit of warmth to the otherwise monochrome palette, softening things just a little. And this gathered Toteme top adds that subtle femininity I’m always after with its lightweight material and gathered detailing.
06
Cargo pants are a piece which will always have a place in my wardrobe. They’ve got that utilitarian, slightly tomboy energy, which is exactly why I love pairing them with softer, more refined elements. Delicate strappy heeled sandals (these Jil Sander ones are so good) instantly shift the vibe to a more feminine feel, and a classic envelope bag adds elegance. A crisp cotton shirt, like this one from Nili Lotan, pulls everything together. It’s the contrast that makes it work — masculine and feminine, relaxed and polished, all in one.

An easy way to make a minimal outfit feel elevated is to wear the same colour head to toe. Especially something as crisp as white, which makes even the simplest pieces look more styled. But the real star here is the espadrilles. Chunky but still elegant, they strike that perfect in-between. Sure, they’ve got a beachy vibe, but I love how they’ve crept into everyday city dressing, there’s something unexpected and cool about seeing them on city streets.
08
Casual but chic. A button-down and jeans is the definition of easy, but making it feel cool comes down to contrast. Light-wash denim with a black shirt feels simple, sharp, and always effective. The accessories do the heavy lifting here: a sculptural sandal like this Khaite pair, pointed sunglasses for a bit of attitude and an interesting two-tone bag to tie it all together. Silver jewellery adds just the right amount of polish.
That’s all for the sandal edit. I wanted to make sure to include a mix of different sandals that feel elevated, versatile and wearable. So, hopefully, these looks gave you a few ideas for how to make them feel chic on a day-to-day basis!
Til next time,
Sophie xx
What I'd Pack for Euro Summer
Packing for a summer holiday can be a little tricky. When abroad, I seem to switch into a different mode where I feel a bit more relaxed and usually a bit more playful with my style. Suddenly, everyday clothes feel too… everyday. We want to have fun on holiday! But that doesn’t mean we need to buy a whole new wardrobe.
